Memorial Day Celebration with Steve Fox

I was in college in the 1960s during the Vietnam War when my best friend from high school came to visit me in New Orleans, where I attended Tulane University. He was a gung-ho, happy-go-lucky kid named George “Pee Wee ” Schnitger. We spent a full day talking of our high school friends and our days at the Pennington School in New Jersey. We both played most sports, and he looked up to me as I was the captain of both the football and baseball team. I enjoyed his company and looked after him since he had lost his father. We were both sad the next day as he left for California, where he was stopping on the way to Vietnam. He sent me a letter from California saying that he was leaving the next day and that he was excited…I never heard from him again.

In 1965, I received notice from the Pennington School that Private Geoge Schnitger had died serving his country.

This holiday has always been the most thoughtful to me. I never forgot my friend, Pee Wee, or the millions who have gone before us to serve. Thank God such men and women dedicated their lives to this for us. There are only two words to describe the meaning of Memorial Day: THANK YOU.

I have parties for many reasons–not the least of which is to celebrate those that sacrificed for all of us—and to bring fun and joy to those that are here to live life.

Come on May 28th to raise a glass and take a moment to remember those who served our country. I have heard too many complainers come up with every excuse to stay home–they are truly missing out. We have the best food, the best music, the best place to bring your friends on this, the most deserved holiday of them all.

Come and enjoy–say “thanks” by living life to the fullest–make their sacrifice worth it!
